Race Info You Need to Know
MR. T's KIDS OF STEEL & SPRINT TRIATHLON JUNE 20, 2010 The event starts at 7am at the public beach on Kalamalka Lake. TRIATHLON BC AT ATHLETE CHECK IN YOU WILL BE REQUIRD TO SHOW PICTURE ID (DRIVERS LICENCE) TO PICK UP YOUR RACE PACKAGE If you are not a member of Tri BC and did not send in the day-of-race fee with your registration then you will be required to pay the day-of-race fee as per the direction we have received from TriBC. RACE RULES Triathlon British Columbia sanctions Mr. T's Kids of Steel & Sprint Triathlon. All Tri BC and Triathlon Canada rules will be in effect during the event. Protests of penalties assessed for rules infractions must be filed with the TriBC Head Official within 60 minutes after the protesting individual finishes the race. Race Numbers There will be three race numbers in your race package that you are required to display during the event: -The adhesive bicycle frame number must be attached to your bike with the race number clearly visilbe from both sides of the bike. -The small adhesive helmet number must be worn on the front of your bike helmet. -the run number must be displayed during the run segment on the front of your body. Pin your number to your shirt, swimsuit or race belt with the four safety pins provided in your race package. This number does not have to be worn on the bike. Body Marking Body marking will take place during package pickup on Friday, June 19th and Saturday June 20th at Sun Country Cycle on Kal Lake Road. You will not be permitted into the transition area without your body marked. Be sure that the volunteer who marks you does so using the race number you have in your race package. Race Day Parking Race day parking will be available in the public parking lot off Husband Road which is directly off Kal Lake Road. Please follow the direction of the parking volunteer's on race morning. Please DO NOT PARK in the area reserved for boats on Kal Vista Drive. YOU WILL BE TOWED!! Please be extra careful when crossing Kal Lake Road from the parking lot into the beach area. This area will be very congested during the race with vehicle traffic and athletes coming out of transition on the bicycles. Please follow the direction of the road marshalls in that area. They will direct you to cross when they deem it is safe for all concerned. Transition Area Access The transition area will be open on race day from 5:30am only. Only athletes who are body marked will be allowed access. Your bike will be checked for the bike frame number at this time as well. Kids of Steel athletes please note: Access to the transition area will be at the west end of the transition area. Please enter through the gate at that end of the transition area. You will not be allowed to enter through the main transition area as the adult race will be in progress. FAMILY & FRIENDS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN TRANSITION *Exception* Kids of Steel athletes 6 & 7 years old may have ONE handler in transition Spectator Viewing Swim - spectators will have access to the pier to watch their athlete in the water. The spectator area on the beach will be marked Bike - At the top of the hill on Cunliffe Road and Coldstream Creek Road - great place to cheer on athletes. For everyones safety - please stay behind the barricades on Kal Lake Road near the transition area. Run - start and finish is on the beach. Great place to send them off and see them cross the finish line! Transition Area Conduct For safety reasons, you will not be permitted to ride your bike in or out of the transtion area. There will be mount and dismount lines marked on the road as well as with a volunteer. You must walk or run while in the transition area. Please watch out for other athletes as you move through transition and follow the instructions of race officials and volunteers. Course Cut-off Times Due to restrictions of municipal permits, race insurance and volunteer staffing, all participants must remain on pace to complete the race Swim 750m - 35 minute limit. The bike cut off time is 9 AM. All participants must be off the bike course by 9 AM. Bike 20 km - All participants must be off the bike course by 9 AM. Run - we will start the Kids of Steel Race at 9am-9:15am. Please be advised that if you are still are the run course you will be sharing it with this next group. Dropping Out Please notify a race official and return your race number at the finish line if you drop out of the race. Unsportmanlike Conduct Unsportmanlike conduct or the verbal abuse of any race official or volunteer during the race or at any time during the event will result in immediate disqualification. Athletes not respecting race officials, race volunteers or race staff will not be welcome to race Mr. T's Triathlon in the future. Timing & Results Official results will be posted on Mr. T's Triathlon website as soon as available. Awards will be presented directly after the Kids of Steel race. Medical Care Medical care will be available to participants. St. John's Ambulance will be on site as well as on the race route. Medical staff will be on hand at the finish line. Please inform us at package pickup if you have any medical concerns we should be aware of. ie. sensitivity to wasp stings etc. Pre-Race Meeting Will be held on the beach prior to the swim start of the Sprint Race and first race of the Kids of Steel race. Bike Racks Bike racks are assigned by age group for the Kids of Steel Race. They will be at the back of the transition area. The Sprint Race will not have designated numbers but will be located close to the mount line. Swim Swim Cap The swim cap placed in your race package must be worn during the swim. Do not trade your swim cap with another athlete, as the caps are color-coded to assist race management in organizing you at the swim start. Wetsuits - Yes- we recommend wetsuits for the Sprint Race distance. Sprint Race - 750m The start of the swim is on the west side of the pier. You will swim out and around the pier to the beach on the east side of the pier - come out of the water - walk around the marker and swim back parallel to the course to the exit. Kids of Steel Race 300m - swim start will be at the east side of the pier. You will swim toward the pier following the course with the orange markers on your left to the exit. You swim around the pier and exit on the west side of the pier 100m - swim start will be on the west side of the pier. You will swim toward the pier following the course with the orange markers on your right to the exit. 50m - swim start will be on the west side of the pier - the water will be up to your waist Yes - you can wear a lifejacket and your parent can be in the water with you. The swim course will be well marked with large orange buoys with smaller orange buoys in between. The swim course will also have a rope running along the entire course. There will be certified lifeguards in kayaks on the water as well as on the pier. You may notice a scuba diver under the water as well at each corner of the swim course. Bike Course Sprint Race - the bike starts on Kal Lake Road at the beach and heads east to Kidston Road. Turn right on Kidston - left on Cunliffe - left on Coldstream Creek Road. Follow Coldstream Creek Road to Mackie Drive-turn right on Mackie. Follow to Howe Road - turn left on Howe. Follow to Kal Lake Road - turn left on Kal Lake Road. Stay on the left side of Kal Lake Road to the transition area where you will turn around and do the route for a second loop and return to transition. Kids of Steel Race - 10K - the same route as the Sprint race but you only do one loop of the course and return to transition 5K - follow Kal Lake Road to Coldstream Elementary School and return to transition 1.5K - follow Kal Lake Road to the 750m mark - turn around will be marked with a race official. Return to transition. Your parents can join you on your bike. Course Rules Each athlete is required to wear an approved helmet during the bike segment. You must have your helmet securely fastened on your head before you take your bike off the bike rack. It must stay on your head until your bike is put back on the rack following the bike portion of the race. Drafting and blocking(impeding the progress of passing cyclists) are not permitted during the race. Course Safety The roads used for Mr. T's Triathlon are open to traffic. Be aware of your surroundings, obey the instructions of traffic control officers and volunteers and be considerate of others during the race. Run Course Sprint Race - Runners exit the transition area onto the beach - heading east. At Kal Lake Road turn right - follow to Kidston Road. Right on Kidston Road to Coldstream Creek Road. Follow Coldstream Creek Road to the turn around. There will be a water table at the turn around. Take the same route back to the finish on the beach. Course Rules It is mandatory that the bib number is worn on the front of your body for the run course. MP3 players and headphones are NOT allowed on the course and you will be disqualifiedand affect your ability to race with us in the future. Aid Stations There will be a water station on the run route.
