1. Work in Notepad - found under Programs, Accessories on your Start Menu

2. Always backup your work, even as you are editing. Use "Save as" under file menu and use: filename2.html, filename3.html, filename4.html to save a file, and continue working.

3. Make small, single changes. Upload the file to the webserver, Refresh the webpage to see what you did.

4. If you are not sure what effect your changes might have, try them out on a test page or a backup file first.

6. The method of editing in brief:
Open a file, say, index.html in notepad
Open the FTP program, say, Coffeecup FTP
Open Internet Explorer (a browser)
Delete some text. Type in new text. Save the changes
Upload the new index.html file
Refresh the webpage. The changes should appear.
If the changes do not appear. Repeat the: Save, Upload, Refresh sequence.



"br" means linebreak
"td" means table cell
"tr" means table row
"p" means paragraph

7. To see what html code does, right click on any webpage and choose, "View Source" and compare the code to the webpage. Look for words and examine the tags before and after the text to see what it did. Try it here. The italics were achieved by placing the tags i and /i fore and aft of the phrase: to see what it did. The tags must be enclosed in pointy brackets, brevets, > < also called "greater than" and "lesser than" in math terms.

Basic Web pages in strict html code consist of graphics: pictures and logos, and text and links.
