Coach Portfolio
My name is Brian Travelbea, I have been involved in various sports since the age of six years old. I am presently 59 years old. I've played minor and semi professional sport. I have attained almost all the goals I set and exeeded some as well. I enjoy people of any age and have always had a passion to teach my love of sport. My coaching career has involved baseball, lacrosse, cycling, swimming, short distance and Ironman distance triathlon. I was a track offical for the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, BC as well as the Director for the marathon. My philosophy first and foremost is that it is important to have fun and enjoy the opportunity of meeting new people, as well as teaching new skills and promoting a higher level of self worth in all the individuals I am so fortunate to have contact with. One should never forget where your path of growth started.....respect each and every athlete........no matter what their nationality or level they are at . Having A CoachA Message from Brian Travelbea For many, the idea of having a Coach is something they personally wouldn't seriously consider. They think a coach is reserved for the elites or that they are not worthy of having a Coach for themselves...... this is where they are wrong! It is the athletes who hold full-time jobs, have families, partners and other responsibilities who are most deserving of a Coach. It is these athletes, who have precious time to train and who are generally quite passionate about their goals, who need a Coach to figure out their training plan. I believe that fitness is a lifestyle. We work hard to strive for that active lifestyle while juggling daily demands. We all want to do that and stay injury free! An athlete who doesn't train full-time ( which is most of us) doesn't need the extra stress of trying to put their own training plan together. Being self-coached creates unnecessary stress plus it can diminish confidence in the training programme. This is where the Coach comes in! A coach, amongst another things will put together your training pr gramme stress-free and allow for an outside perspective throughout the entire season. This will provide insight and balance which is hard to find when one is self-coached. I've been in this position – so I know!! Having Brian as your CoachThank you for the opportunity to be your coach. Please take a few minutes to read the following. I believe that an athlete who is taking the time to work with a coach is showing me how serious (and passionate) they are about their goals. There should only be great respect involved in this relationship. ConfidentialityOne of the most important things to me in coaching is athlete-to-coach confidentiality! Given the racing and training environment, it's somewhat inevitable that others will know who my athletes are, but this is the only way they would find such information from me. Athlete confidentially is top priority for me and no information regarding an athlete's programme is ever shared with others without the consent from the athlete involved. Therefore it is crucial that you don't share your programme with other athletes. It is your programme and yours only! FunFun is a huge aspect of both my athlete's training as well as my own! While seriousness and commitment is a significant part of the training programme, it should be balanced with “fun”. What is the point of training or racing if we aren't having “fun”. OpennessWhile I am the Coach and will guide an athlete towards his goals, I do value an athlete's input greatly and feel it is an important part of the training process. While I continually look for ways to expand my coaching business, the number of athletes I coach one-on-one is something I will not compromise. It is important to me that my athletes receive the attention they deserve and I will never take on more athletes just to brag about how many people I coach. Quality is top priority to me! One advantage I see to my coaching is that I have been involved in running, bicycle racing, swimming and triathlon for over 27 years. I am one of eighteen Nationally Certified Competitive Coaches in Canada. The only one in the North Okanagan. I hope I can help you attain your goals through my experience and knowledge. Brian Travelbea P.S. I am a Nationally Certified Coach (NCCP) with over 35 years of experience in cycling, swimming, running and triathlon. I am presently one of only eighteen nationally certified coaches in Canada. I was the start and finish line/course coordinator for the Victoria Marathon for 21 years and the Victoria Times Colonist 10K I was the director of the marathon for the Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 1994. I was on the board of directors for the cycling road race and the race walking events for the games. I was an elite track official for the track and field events for the Commonwealth Games Prior to the Commonwealth Games I directed an Ekidan relay. The first of its kind in North America. From 1980 -1994 I was the Race Director for the Pioneer 8km road race in Saanich. I was instrumental in getting the Victoria Youth Triathlon up and running. I competed in the first triathlon in Canada – The Sri Chinmoy and subsequently became one of its founding members and sat on the board of directors for 15 years. I have a level 3 track official and level 5 for road race officiating status with BC Athletics. I have completed 6 Ironman including the first one in Kona in 1982. I hold a current certified First Aid certificate. You can contact me with questions regarding hiring me as a coach by e-mail at coaching4u @ gmail.com
